Licencing Requirements

Class “G” Licence

A class "G" driver's licence allows you to drive any car, van or small truck or combination of vehicle and towed vehicle up to 11,000 kg provided the towed vehicle is not over 4, 600 kg, but not,

  • a motorcycle or motor assisted bicycle;
  • a bus carrying passengers, or
  • an ambulance in the course of providing ambulance service as defined in the Ambulance Act.

An applicant for a class “G” licence must:

  • Be 16 years old at the time of application;
  • Pass a knowledge test;
  • Meet the Ministry-approved vision standards;
  • Pass two road tests (G2 and G) to become fully licenced.


Class "A" or "D" Licence

A class “A” driver’s licence allows you to drive a motor vehicle and towed vehicles where the towed vehicles exceed a total gross weight of 4600 kg (10,000 lb); and vehicles included in class D and G.  A class “A” licence does not permit you to drive a bus carrying passengers, a motorcycle or a moped.

A class “D” driver’s licence allows you to drive a motor vehicle exceeding 11,000 kg (24,000 lb) gross weight or registered gross weight, or any combination of motor vehicle exceeding a total gross weight of 11,000 kg (24,000 lb) and towed vehicle not exceeding a total gross weight of 4600 kg (10,000 lb).  It also allows you to operate vehicles in class G.  A class “D” licence does not permit you to drive a bus carrying passengers, a motorcycle or a moped.

An applicant for a class “A” or “D” licence must:

  • Be at least 18 years old;
  • Hold a valid Ontario class “G” licence;
  • Pass the applicable knowledge test; 
  • Meet the Ministry-approved vision standards; 
  • Provide a satisfactory medical certificate upon application. Ministry-approved medical requirements must be satisfied before any test except vision may be administered; 
  • Demonstrate driving competence during a road test while driving the following types of vehicle:
    • For Class “D” – a motor vehicle exceeding 11,000 kg (24,000 lb) gross weight or registered gross weight.
    • For Class “A” – a motor vehicle and towed vehicle where the towed vehicle exceeds a total gross weight of 4600 kg (10,000 lb).

Notes: 

A “Z” air brake endorsement is required on a driver’s licence to operate any air brake equipped motor vehicle.

Subsequent submission of medical reports are as follows for class A drivers:
  • Drivers under the age of 46 must submit a medical report every five years. 
  • Drivers aged 46 to 64 inclusive must submit a medical report every three years.
  • Drivers aged 65 and older are required to submit a medical report every year.   

Class D drivers aged 80 and older are required to submit medical reports every year.


Class "C" or "F" Licence

A class “C” licence is needed to drive any bus with seats for more than 24 passengers, but not a school purposes bus carrying passengers.  It allows the driver to operate vehicles included in classes D, F and G but not motorcycles.

A class “F” licence is needed to drive an ambulance or any bus with seats for 10 or more passengers but not more than 24 passengers and not a school purposes bus carrying passengers.  It also allows the driver to operate vehicles included in class G but not motorcycles.

An applicant for a class “C” or “F” licence must:

  • Be at least 18 years old; 
  • Hold a valid Ontario class “G” licence or higher;
  • Pass the applicable knowledge test;
  • Meet the Ministry-approved vision standards; 
  • Provide a medical certificate upon application. Ministry-approved medical requirements must be satisfied before any test except vision may be administered; 
  • Pass a road test examination at DriveTest, or obtain a certificate of competence from a Ministry of Transportation recognized authority by passing a vision screening, a knowledge test and a driving test in a vehicle of appropriate size.

Class "B" or "E" Licence

A class “B” licence is needed to drive any school purposes bus having seats for more than 24 passengers.  It also allows you to operate vehicles included in classes C, D, E, F and G but not motorcycles.

A class “E” licence is needed to drive any school purposes bus having seats for not more than 24 passengers.  It also allows you to operate vehicles included in class F and G, but not motorcycle.

An applicant for a class “B” or “E” licence must:

  • Be at least 21 years old;
  • Hold a valid Ontario class “G” licence or higher;
  • Pass the applicable knowledge test;
  • Meet the Ministry-approved vision standards;
  • Provide a medical certificate upon application. Ministry-approved medical requirements must be satisfied before any test except vision may be administered; 
  • Pass a criminal record search; 
  • Have successfully completed a School Bus Driver Improvement course approved by the Ministry and be able to show proof of successful completion with a valid course certificate; 
  • Pass a road test examination at DriveTest or obtain a certificate of competence from a Ministry of Transportation recognized authority by passing a vision screening, a knowledge test and a driving test in a vehicle of appropriate size;
  • Not have accumulated more than 6 demerit points on his/her driving record;
  • Not have had a driver’s licence under suspension at any time within the preceding 12 months as a result of having been convicted or found guilty of any offences outlined in the driver’s handbook for Bus.

  • Drivers aged 46 to 64 inclusive must submit a medical report every three years. 
  • Drivers aged 65 and older are required to submit a medical report every year.        

Class “M” Licence

An applicant for a class “M” licence must:

  • Be at least 16 years old;
  • Meet the Ministry-approved vision standards;
  • Pass knowledge test of traffic signs, knowledge of motorcycles and the rules of the road; 
  • Pass two road tests (M2 and M) to become fully licenced.

Driving Instructor Licence

An applicant for a Driving Instructor Licence must:

  • Hold a valid driver’s licence other than class” G1”, “G2”, “M1”, “M2”, “M(L)”; 
  • Be 18 years of age or older;
  • Have no demerit points on your driver’s record; 
  • Pass a terminal check to ensure you meet licencing requirements; 
  • Meet Ministry-approved vision standards;
  • Pass a “G1” knowledge test (there is a one year wait period following two unsuccessful attempts);
  • Pass a “G” highway test (there is a one year wait period following two unsuccessful attempts); 
  • Pass a police record search;
  • Complete an MTO-approved Driving Instructor Course.
