If you have a driver's licence that is not from another Canadian province
or territory, the United States, Japan, Korea, Austria, Australia, Isle of Man, Germany, France, Great Britain, Belgium, Switzerland or
Canadian Forces Europe and you have been driving for less than one year in
the past three years, then you must start with a
Level 1 (Class G1) licence.
There are two levels in graduated licensing. It takes two years of driving
experience before you can apply to get a full licence to drive a car, van or
small truck in Ontario. However, the time that you have been driving in the
country you had your licence will be part of those two years.
First, you must get a Level 1 (Class G1) licence. After you practise driving for a
total of 12 months - including your past experience - you can take a road test
to get a Level 2 (Class G2) licence. If you pass the road test, you must practise
driving for another 12 months before you can take the second road test to get a
full licence.
If you complete a recognized driver education course at a driving school, you
can reduce the time you need in Level 1
(Class G1) to take the first road test by four
months.
How do I get a Level 1 (Class G1) licence?
Bring the following items to any DriveTest
Driver Examination Centre. The addresses of these centres are also
listed in the blue pages of your local telephone book.
-
proof of name and the date of your birth. You must be 16
years or older,
-
a piece of personal identification that has your signature. Your record
of landing from the Canada Immigration Centre is an example of acceptable proof
of identification. There is a list of other acceptable pieces of identification
in The Driver's Handbook.
-
an original document in English or French to prove you have a driver's
licence from the country where you were driving.
All documents must be originals and they must be in English or French. If the documents
are in another language, they should be translated into English or French.
At the DriveTest Centre, you must:
-
pass a vision test
to check your eyesight;
-
pass a knowledge test
on Ontario's laws of the road;
-
pay the fee for a licence and the first road test.
To get ready for the knowledge test, you can buy
The Driver's Handbook from the DriveTest
Centre, at any independently operated
Driver and Vehicle Licence Issuing Office or Retail Outlets across
Ontario. Read the handbook. Study Ontario's road signs and the laws of the road
before you take the knowledge test.
The knowledge test is available in English, French, Greek, Spanish, Italian,
Chinese, Portuguese, Polish, Russian, Hindi, Finnish, German, Croatian,
Punjabi, Korean, Tamil and Somali at some DriveTest Centres in Ontario.
If you need the test in any of these languages, please check with your local
Centre.
If your local Centre does not have the knowledge test in your language, you can
take the test with an interpreter. The interpreter cannot be a friend or a
family member. The DriveTest Centre will tell you who to contact to find a
licensed interpreter. This interpretation service will cost some money.
If you pass the vision test, the knowledge test, and can show proof of your
driving licence and experience, then you will get a
Level 1 (Class G1) licence.
You can now begin to practise driving in Ontario! You must follow all of the
laws of Ontario's roads and the special rules of the
Level 1 (Class G1) licence. These
rules are in the Ready for the
road booklet.
The DriveTest Centre will tell you how much time you will need to practise
driving so that you have a total of 12 months experience. This will depend on
how long you were licensed to drive before you moved to Ontario.
Once your practice period is over, you can take the first road test to get a
Level 2 (Class G2) licence. After another 12 months of driving you can take the second
road test. If you pass this road test you will get a Class G Ontario driver's
licence and you will be a fully licensed Ontario driver!
