If you have a driver's licence that is not from another Canadian province
or territory, the United States, Japan, Korea, Austria, Australia, Isle of Man, Germany, France, Great Britain, Belgium, Switzerland or
Canadian Forces Europe and you have been driving for more than one year but less
than two years in the past three years, you can make an appointment to
take the first road test to get a Level 2
(Class G2) licence.
You will need to bring the following items to any
DriveTest Driver Examination Centre. The addresses of these centres are
also listed in the blue pages of your local telephone book.
-
proof of name and the date of your birth. You must be 16
years or older;
-
a piece of personal identification that has your signature. Your record
of landing from the Canada Immigration Centre is an example of acceptable proof
of identification. There is a list of other acceptable pieces of identification
in The Driver's Handbook;
-
an original document in English or French to prove you have a driver's
licence from the country where you were driving.
All documents must be originals and they must be in English or French. If the documents
are in another language, they should be translated into English or French.
At the Examination Centre, before you can take your road test you must:
-
pass a vision test
to check your eyesight;
-
pass a knowledge test
on Ontario's laws of the road.
-
pay the fee for a licence and the road test;
To get ready for the knowledge test, you can buy
The Driver's Handbook from the DriveTest
Centre, at any independently operated
Driver and Vehicle Licence Issuing Office or at Retail Outlets across
Ontario. Read the handbook. Study Ontario's road signs and the laws of the road
before you take the knowledge test.
The knowledge test is available in English, French, Greek, Spanish, Italian,
Chinese, Portuguese, Polish, Russian, Hindi, Finnish, German, Croatian,
Punjabi, Korean, Tamil and Somali at some DriveTest Centres in Ontario.
If you need the test in any of these languages, please check with your local
Centre.
If your local Centre does not have the knowledge test in your language, you can
take the test with an interpreter. The interpreter cannot be a friend or a
family member. The DriveTest Centre will tell you who to contact to find a
licensed interpreter. This interpretation service will cost some money.
If you pass the vision test and knowledge test, you can make an appointment
at the DriveTest Centre to take
your Level 1 (Class G1) road test.
You must provide a car for the road test. During this test, the examiner will
give you simple directions. The examiner will watch your driving to see if you
are driving safely and following the rules of the road. You may not have
an interpreter with you during the road test.
If you pass this road test, you will get a
Level 2 (Class G2) licence. You must practise
driving for a total of 12 months with a
Level 2 (Class G2) licence. The time that you
were driving before you moved to Ontario can be a part of those 12 months. The DriveTest Centre will tell you how much time you will need to practise driving
so that you have a total of 12 months of experience.
If you do not pass the road test, the staff at the DriveTest Centre will tell
you what to do next.
While driving with a Level 2 (Class G2) licence, you must follow all the laws of
Ontario's roads and follow the special rules of the
Level 2 (Class G2) licence. These
rules are in the Ready for the
road booklet.
When you feel you are ready, you can phone a DriveTest
Centre to make an appointment for a
Level 2 (Class G2) road test. Your
road test must take place after you have completed your full practice
period. Once you pass this last road test, you will get a Class G Ontario
driver's licence and you will be a fully licensed Ontario driver!
